Day After Christmas

Twas the day after Christmas and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring 'cept Mimi cleaning house.

Everyone else was in recliner or bed,
The Christmas tree needles almost all shed.

Belle, the puppy, her treats all long gone,
Was chewing Mimi's house shoes and new cordless phone.

I in recliner, remote control in hand,
Watching Discovery tour the Holy Land.

Belle jumped in my lap, to sleep like a log,
And sniffed at my glass of Mimi's prize eggnog.

But she needed walking, her tummy doing flips,
From eating packing peanuts and two packing slips.

Then outside I heard such a clatter
Mimi opened the door to see what's the matter.

The sanitation workers were picking up trash
And bags of paper and bows and a sash.

But our stuff was stacked in the garage so neat,
My one job had been take it out to the street.

I must have drifted off from way too much fudge,
Because from the recliner I had not budged.

She gave me that look and said Sakes Alive,
Till next week you can just park in the drive.

On vacuum, on sweeper, on dust mop, and broom
She picked up and dusted and scoured each room.

I said can I help, then I heard her say,
Just stay in the recliner and out of my way!

At last she was finished in time to watch Leno
And sleep late tomorrow till 6:01 or :02.

Me and Belle napped with remote still handy,
And a bowl of Mimi's Martha Washington candy.

Another Wonderful Christmas Mimi made blest,
Maybe next weekend she can get a little rest.
